Post-settlement recourse for agentic payments

When an AI agent pays for an API, dataset or compute over x402 / stablecoins, there is no chargeback and no dispute mechanism. Agentic Payment Assurance closes that gap: cryptographic proof-of-delivery, automatic mismatch detection, and an exportable dispute evidence pack for MiCA / EU AI Act audit trails. Non-custodial — we never hold funds, keys or escrow.

The gap we close. A July 2026 deep-dive on the x402 Foundation launch notes: "What happens if my AI agent makes a payment I didn't authorize through x402? Currently, very little… no credit card reversal or dispute mechanism." The three existing MJ Heemskerk Holding ventures govern the pre-payment gate (Agentic Spend Policy Gateway) and post-payment monitoring (Agentic Payment Risk Monitor) and the sell-side billing (x402 Merchant Adapter) — but no one covers post-settlement delivery assurance & dispute recourse. This is that layer.

What it does

A lightweight assurance layer that sits after the payment settles — verifying that the agent actually received what it paid for, and producing an audit-ready pack when it did not.

🔏 Proof-of-delivery

Sellers post a SHA-256 proof-of-delivery (hash of the artifact + signed receipt). Integrity is verified on ingest.

🔍 Hash verification

Buyer-agents verify a delivered artifact hash against the expected hash. Mismatch is flagged in milliseconds.

⚖️ Dispute & evidence

On mismatch or non-delivery, a dispute opens with a full evidence pack: payment manifest, PoD, agent mandate, spend policy.

📑 Audit export

Evidence packs export as JSON + CSV, ready for MiCA / EU AI Act audit trails. Non-binding, demo-grade.

How the flow works

Four steps embedded in the agentic commerce lifecycle — no human in the loop required.

1 · Settle

Agent pays USDC via x402 on testnet (demo). The sale is settled, but delivery is not yet assured.

2 · Deliver + prove

Seller returns the artifact and posts a proof-of-delivery hash + signed receipt to the assurance layer.

3 · Verify

Buyer-agent (or policy engine) checks the delivered hash vs the expected hash. Match → closed. Mismatch/non-delivery → dispute.

4 · Evidence pack

A dispute produces an exportable evidence pack mapped to MiCA / EU AI Act obligations. No funds held, ever.

Why now

Agentic payments just crossed from research to infrastructure — and the recourse layer is missing.

x402 Foundation launched

14 Jul 2026 under the Linux Foundation with 40 members (Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, AWS, Coinbase). Cloudflare serves ~1B HTTP 402/day.

Volume is rising

x402 transactions rebounded to ~2.89M/month at a $0.52 average — high-frequency, low-value agent spend that needs recourse.

Regulation is live

MiCA full enforcement (1 Jul 2026) and EU AI Act high-risk + GPAI enforcement (2 Aug 2026) make accountability mandatory.
